…The god that is the HK bureaucracy.

You know how for most people, especially Indians, bureaucracy is equated with stodginess and inefficiency. Not here.

All my run-ins with bureaucracy in HK, largely predicated by my own efficiency, have been met with astonishingly speedy action and redress. Whether it is loss of an ID card, inability to find income tax statements or other stupid carelessness on my part, I only have to make one call (or even email) to get help. And it’s actually help.

I hang up with a feeling akin to what Catholics might experience when they come out of a confessional. A sense of lightness as well slight remorse and the resolve to do better. Until I lose the next letter, that is.
